The European Commission has recently launched the EU Tourism Platform, a revolutionary initiative aimed at accelerating the transition to sustainability, digital innovation, and resilience within the tourism sector. This platform, created by the European Service Network S.A (ESN) and consortium led by PWC Hungary, serves as a one-stop hub for resources, data, and collaboration, supporting businesses, destinations, and policymakers.
Tourism is a vital part of Europe’s economy, contributing nearly 10% to the EU’s GDP. Speaking at the Global Tourism Forum in Brussels, European Commissioner for Transport and Tourism, Apostolos Tzitzikostas, emphasized the importance of the sector, stating that it not only boosts economic opportunities but also supports millions of jobs across the continent. However, in order to remain a world leader, the tourism industry must adapt to climate change, technological shifts, and evolving consumer expectations.
Recognizing these challenges, the EU Tourism Platform offers tools, funding opportunities, and best practices to help tourism operators adapt and thrive. Its features include an interactive dashboard to track progress on sustainability, digitalization, and socio-economic resilience, a knowledge hub with policy updates and training programs for small and medium-sized enterprises, and networking tools for stakeholders to collaborate on innovation projects and exchange best practices.
This platform comes at a crucial time as the tourism industry faces the need to make a green and digital transition. With the platform’s resources and support, businesses and destinations can keep up with regulatory changes, investment demands, and evolving consumer behavior while also contributing to the EU’s goals of sustainability and resilience.
