Is there anything better than summer in Italy? (Except the heat…I know!)
The first time I stepped foot on Italian soil was between my junior and senior year of college, when my friend and I took the train from Nice near the French/Italian border and spent the afternoon and evening in Santa Margherita Ligure. Those hours were like something out of an Italian movie — the sights, sounds, colors, tastes. I’m thrilled that this town is part of the eight destinations that contributing writer Kevin Raub shares for making Italian summer dreams come true.
Kevin asked some of our favorite locals and Italophiles for the inside scoop on these eight under-the-radar beach destinations. My dear friend and Under the Tuscan Sun author Frances Mayes shared this sweet spot in Le Marche that’s perfect for a summer hideaway — also featured in Kevin’s article.
This issue’s Dream Day in Italy also features the sea — a stunning pink beach in Sardinia with crystal clear waters. Plus, I take you to the Tuscan coast to my new favorite hotel — the Sense Experience Resort — a place that soothes body, soul and stomach. I first visited in April and loved it so much I’m back here again as we finish up this issue!
One thing that’s intriguing about a trip to Italy is crossing over to one of its borders. Kevin highlights Gorizia, a town on the Italian/Slovenian border, and its Slovenian counterpart of Nova Gorica, showing off the best cross-cultural experiences, eats and stays. Combining Italy and Slovenia in one trip is a particularly good idea for travelers looking for something different and to get away from the increasing number of tourists in many Italian destinations.
