My selection of the prettiest towns in Piedmont Langhe area for small town feel, delicious food and outstanding views.
Piedmont is a stunning region in the north west of Italy, famous for outstanding food and wine production: white truffles, barolo and nutella are from here, just to give a sample of how varied and significant the food offers is here!
It is also a beautiful region for town hopping as Piedmont in general and the area of Le Langhe in particular has many adorable towns, perfect for leisurely walks, casual sightseeing and, of course, meals with a view.
I was lucky enough to visit Le Langhe recently and explored many towns, one pretties than the other!
I am head over heels in love with this area and today I want to share my selection of the my prettiest towns in Piedmont’s Langhe to visit and stay. I’ll write guides for each asap, this is just the start!
The area is still largely off the main international tourism path which means it still feels local, authentic and is blissfully empty of the maddening crowds that now flood so many other parts of Italy.
This is one of the many reasons why I recommend this area to everyone, whether you may be looking for a couple’s destination, a girlfriends’ getaway idea or of course a family trip.
This is one of the best places in Piedmont with kids (and in Italy in general!)

Top tips to plan your visit TL; DR
To visit this area you need a car. We rented via Discover Cars in Turin and found the price good and the driving easy. You do not need 4×4 or any special car, we had a Fiat 500!
To stay, I highly recommend:
- Villa La Meridiana, delightful country stay just above Alba, with lovely country setting and pool, but walking distance to the town. Perfect for all including families, we already cannot wait to come back!
- Villaggio Narrante at Fontanafredda Estate, especially their Cascina Galarej for an intimate stay or their Hotel Case Conti di Mirafiore which is just beside their historic cellar, Michelin starred restaurant and truffle hunting forest
I stayed in both and found them both excellent, I cannot recommend them enough!
The best time to visit this area is late spring (May/ June), September-October and then November for truffle season.
I recommend a minimum of four days to enjoy the area, ideally more. The closes airport is Turin.
Neive – one of the most beautiful small towns in Italy
Neive is a lovely small center, regularly voted as one of the prettiest towns in Italy (borghi piu’ belli d’Italia) and as soon as you arrive it is easy to see why!

Neive is on a hilltop and has small streets with pretty houses with flowery balconies, delicate architectural details that made me think of Swiss and almost Tyrolean elements, and sweet viewpoints with amazing views over the rolling heels if this area.
We came to Neive one morning and stayed for lunch, which i highly recommend as food here is outstanding. Eat at Umano and trust the owner for recommendations on the best dish and wine. You won’t be disappointed!
Barbaresco
Bbarbaresco is a super pretty small town on a hilltop just beside the river Tanaro.

Most people know it because of its wine (Barbaresco) and its tower, which you can climb for outstanding views over the countryside and the river itself.
The town is small and pretty, with a medieval feel and wonderful views. If you want to climb the tower, you can do so easily as there is a lift but you must not be afraid of heights and you are definitely high up, here!
The town itself you can visit in a matter of minutes and there are cafes for a break: we stopped at the one at the tower which has lovely views and informal atmosphere.
Barolo
Barolo is the town that gives the name from the most famous wine of this area: elegant Barolo!

Barolo is a small and very pretty town on a hilltop, developing around Barolo castle, now hosting the fun and interesting museum of wine (fabulous and kid friendly, I highly recommend it!).
The castle overlooks a pretty square with the local church which seems out or a medieval fairytale book, complete with a pink facade and frescoes.
The rest of the town is made if meandering cobbles streets with pretty doors and windows: look up as you wander as the details are as pretty as the overall picture!
The town has a strong wine vocation and delicious restaurants with pergolas for summer and cozy interiors for fall abound.
Grinzane Cavour
Grinzane Cavour is one of the prettiest towns in Piedmont developing around the wonderful castle by the same name.

The castle is open to visitors ans it is significant in the history of Italy thanks to its connection with Camillo Benso Conte Di Cavour, one of the most significant figures in the history of Italy as a unified country.
The castle is the center of this small and pretty town and is surrounded by vineyards and unobstructed views as far as the eye can seen.
Around the castle there and there is a fantastic short walk with educational installations teaching about the grapes of the area. Worth doing for views and the insight provided!
Alba
Alba is the biggest towns in this list and the one with most to offer in terms of number of shops, accommodation, restaurants and pure sightseeing.

Mostly flat (and absolutely perfect for strollers or anyone who need easy mobility, ideal for a stay with kids!) Alba is an ancient town with a pleasant center, roman ruins and several pretty churches worth seeing.
The town is well know for its truffles and has a newly opened truffle museum that is interesting to see.
Serralunga d’Alba
Serralunga d’Alba is a tiny center, a cluster of streets around a tall medieval castle (open to the public) which literally towers about this small village and the rolling hills nearby.

The castle here is the star if the show but it is worth also strolling the town and stay for a drink or a taste of local specialties. For instance, Casa Mia, where we stopped, has a delightful terrace with open views that are basically a picture perfect snapshot of what the Langhe is all about: rolling hills, vines, elegance, slow pace, quality and outstanding beauty.
