For fashionistas and travelers alike, Milan is a city filled with unique charm and exquisite beauty. However, even the most picturesque cities have their share of problems. In an effort to maintain the city’s beauty and safety, the local police have recently taken action by removing 40 lockboxes from the streets of Milan.
The lockboxes, also known as “lucchettoni,” were commonly used by bed and breakfast establishments in the city to store keys for their guests. This operation, coordinated by the local police and the Nuir, began on Monday, January 5th and continued through the Epiphany holiday.
This blitz was reported by MilanoToday and comes just over a month after the decision made by the City Council on December 4th to modify the urban police regulations, banning the installation of lockboxes on public structures.
These lockboxes were often seen attached to streetlights, road signs, fences, and other public structures, causing a nuisance to the city’s aesthetic.
According to the new regulations, the local authorities have the right to forcefully remove any lockboxes found in violation, without prior notice. The costs of these interventions will be charged to the responsible parties, who may also face fines ranging from 100 to 400 euros.
Similar bans have already been implemented in other popular tourist cities such as Rome and Florence. The Milano City Council has stated that the control and removal operations will continue in the coming weeks to ensure that the city’s streets remain clean and free from unnecessary clutter.
This move reflects a larger trend in cities across Italy, where measures are being taken to preserve the beauty and safety of popular tourist destinations. As Milan continues to attract visitors from all over the world, it is important for the city to uphold its reputation as a fashion and design capital.
