As the summer comes to an end, Italian transportation unions are preparing for a month of potential disruptions in the transportation sector. From nationwide railway strikes to local public transportation stoppages, travelers and commuters may face some challenges in September.
September in Italy: Multiple Strikes Expected in the Transportation Sector
The first nationwide strike will take place on September 4th and 5th, organized by the General Union of Base and the National Assembly of PdM/PdB of the Fsi Group. This strike will affect both passenger and freight train transportation from 9:00 PM on September 4th to 6:00 PM on September 5th. However, Trenitalia and Italo have announced that some medium and long-distance trains will still be in operation. A list of these guaranteed trains can be found on their respective websites.
In the aviation sector, two national strikes are expected to take place on September 6th and 26th. On September 6th, airline workers from Easyjet, Volotea, and WizzAir will participate in the strike for the entire day. Employees responsible for baggage handling and security at airports in Lamezia Terme, Reggio Calabria, Crotone, Rome, Florence, Pisa, and Catania will also be striking for four hours (from 12:00 PM to 4:00 PM). At Milan Linate Airport, the strike will last for 24 hours. The second national strike, organized by the Cub Trasporti union, will take place on September 26th will involve both ground and flight operators. Workers from Volotea will also strike on this day.
In the local public transportation sector in Rome, Atac workers have planned two strikes, both lasting for four hours. The first will take place on September 4th from 8:30 AM to 12:30 PM, organized by the Sul union to demand better working hours and production bonuses. The second will occur on September 18th from 8:30 PM until 12:30 AM, organized by Usb Lavoro Privato and Orsa Tpl.
On September 6th, employees of the maritime transport company Moby in Livorno will go on strike to demand recognition of meal vouchers and overtime pay. Additionally, on September 8th, there will be a strike for the entire day in Enna, Catania, and Palermo, with guaranteed services during peak hours (6:00 AM to 9:00 AM and 1:30 PM to 4:30 PM). On September 15th, there will be strikes throughout the day in Umbria and in the cities of Prato, Pistoia, Florence.
