Last week I was in Rome, just a few days after the Pope’s funeral. I met up with some friends to visit his tomb in the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore. I was struck by how simple the tomb is and how peaceful the experience was and I shared my thoughts with a reporter from Express (U.K.) We were lucky to only wait 20 minutes in line.
“This papal basilica is one of my favorite churches in the world and I too have a strong connection to the Virgin Mary so I understand well why Pope Francis chose to go against tradition and be buried there versus within Vatican City,” I told Express. “Santa Maria Maggiore was already popular, but will become one of the most visited sites in Rome soon,” I added.
My tip to quickly gain entrance into the basilica is to download the Jubilee app and make a free reservation to enter the Holy Door at Santa Maria Maggiore. The Pope’s tomb is to the left of the door a short walk into the basilica. – Kathy McCabe
